Qué (quién) es Applets - definición

INTERNET APPLET ARE SMALL PROGRAMS THAT ARE EMBEDDED IN THE WEB PAGES AND A RUN ON VIEWER'S MACHINE IN A SECURED MANNER BY JAVA CAPABLE BROWSERS
Applets; Applett

applet
<World-Wide Web> A Java program which can be distributed as an attachment in a World-Wide Web document and executed by a Java-enabled web browser such as Sun's HotJava, Netscape Navigator version 2.0, or Internet Explorer. Navigator severely restricts the applet's file system and network access in order to prevent accidental or deliberate security violations. Full Java applications, which run outside of the browser, do not have these restrictions. Web browsers can also be extended with plug-ins though these differ from applets in that they usually require manual installation and are platform-specific. Various other languages can now be embedded within HTML documents, the most common being JavaScript. Despite Java's aim to be a "write once, run anywhere" language, the difficulty of accomodating the variety of browsers in use on the Internet has led many to abandon client-side processing in favour of server-side Java programs for which the term servlet was coined. Merriam Webster "Collegiate Edition" gives a 1990 definition: a short application program especially for performing a simple specific task. (2002-07-12)

Applet

In computing, an applet is any small application that performs one specific task that runs within the scope of a dedicated widget engine or a larger program, often as a plug-in. The term is frequently used to refer to a Java applet, a program written in the Java programming language that is designed to be placed on a web page. Applets are typical examples of transient and auxiliary applications that don't monopolize the user's attention. Applets are not full-featured application programs, and are intended to be easily accessible.

1. SUBTLE PRESSURE Step back from the screen and increasingly desktop applets, instant messaging windows, mobile phone browsers and interactive TV menus all look alike.
2. And as O‘Reilly admits, many Web 1.0 sites also espoused the same principles: "Netscape promoted a ‘webtop‘ to replace the desktop, and planned to populate that webtop with information updates and applets pushed to the webtop by information providers who would purchase Netscape servers." As a result, it‘s all too easy to exploit the Web 2.0 marketing buzz whether a website qualifies or not.
